Brooke Christa Shields was born on May 31, 1965. As a child model, she earned acclaim for her work for her leading role in Louis Malle's film Pretty Baby (1978). She modeled into her teenage yearsand was recognized for her performance in Louis Malle's 1978 film Pretty Baby. Shields started acting again in the early 1990s, and appeared in minor roles in movies. She also appeared in the NBC sitcoms Suddenly Susan (1996-192000), for which she won two Golden Globe nominations and Lipstick Jungle (2008)-2009. Shields returned to NBC in 2017 for a recurring role as a Law & Order: Special Victims unit character in the show's 19th Season. She was the daughter of actress and model Teri Shields (nee Schmon; 1933-2012) and businessman Frank Shields (1941-2003). Her mother was of English, German, Scotch-Irish, and Welsh origin, and her father was of English, French, Irish, and Italian ancestry.According to research by William Addams Reitwiesner, Shields has ancestral connections to numerous noble families of Italy and, specifically, from Genoa and Rome. These are namely (in chronological order of descent from 1355 to 1965) the Gattilusi-Palaiologos-Savoy, Grimaldi, Imperiali, Carafa, Doria, Doria-Pamphili-Landi, Chigi-Albani, and Torlonia dynasties. Her paternal grandmother was the Italian noblewoman Marina Torlonia di Civitella-Cesi, who was the daughter of an Italian prince and an American socialite. Her great-uncle was Alessandro Torlonia from Italy, who was married to Infanta Beatriz of Spain. Teri's family paid Frank the sum of money to end her pregnancy.
